Comparison

Surgical case log apps, named and compared.

A surgical resident usually weighs the ACGME's own app, a spreadsheet or EMR report, and apps such as Capnolog, UNIRA, and RVU Edge. This page compares them from each app's own listing, including the rows Capnolog loses.

Where Capnolog fits

Capnolog logs neurosurgery today: each case by CPT code, counted against every ACGME defined category as you log it. General surgery, orthopaedics, and the other surgical specialties are in build, each with a page describing what is being built.

Why neurosurgery residents choose Capnolog

Five differences, each one checkable against the other apps' own pages, which are linked further down.

  1. Built by a current resident, across specialties.

Capnolog is built by a current resident who files an ACGME case log too. Anesthesiology came first and neurological surgery second; general surgery and orthopaedics are in build, each counted against its own ACGME categories.

  2. Credited the way the ACGME's report counts the case.

Every defined category carries two bars, primary surgeon and lead plus senior, kept apart from the moment you log. That is how the ACGME's own minimum report prints them.

  3. Search the way you say the case.

Type “L4-5 TLIF”, say “crani for tumor”, or enter the bare code, and the matching CPT codes come to you. The code you pick is the one the ACGME counts.

  4. Every defined category, cranial to critical care.

Each case counts against the ACGME's neurosurgery categories the moment you log it. UNIRA's listing describes per-CPT exports for boards and the ACGME, not progress against the categories.

  5. Logging costs nothing.

Logging and export in Capnolog are free. UNIRA's resident plan is $4.99 a month and needs program verification. RVU Edge is $0.99 a month or $19.99 once, after a free first month.

The apps on this page, and the others surgeons use

Each fact below is what the app's own listing, site, or policy says. Follow the links and read them yourself.

  • ACGME Case Logs

The ACGME's own Case Log System, on the web and in the ACGME Case Logs app for iPhone and Android. It is the system of record, so what you enter there is submitted.

  • UNIRA

An iPhone app for surgeons with case logging, operative notes, and case prep. It imports ACS Surgeon Specific Registry exports and spreadsheets, and exports per-CPT breakdowns for boards and the ACGME. The resident plan is $4.99 a month and requires program verification.

  • RVU Edge

A case and wRVU tracker for a whole career. It tracks ACGME case categories for 14 surgical specialties, keeps its data on the device rather than in a cloud, and exports PDF, Excel, and CSV. Its site describes a Chrome extension that fills board portal forms. It costs $0.99 a month or $19.99 once, after a free first month.

  • ABOS KSB+

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery's app. Orthopaedic residents in participating programs enter their ACGME Case Logs through it, and residents sitting ABOS Part I from July 2026 must take part.

What to check before you choose

  • Whether the credit matches the report

The ACGME prints primary surgeon apart from lead plus senior. Check that an app keeps the two apart from the moment you log.

  • How a CPT code is found

Check whether you can search by the words you use for an operation, or only by the code you already know.

  • What happens at the Submit button

The ACGME record is yours to attest to. Ask whether an app fills the form, exports a file, or presses Submit itself.

  • What it costs once the trial ends

Check what logging, filing, and export each cost after any trial, and whether a resident price needs proof of training.

  • Where it lives after graduation

Ask where the record sits once your training account closes, who holds the backup, and what it costs to keep reading it.

Where Capnolog stands

  • Phones only, no web appAvailable

Capnolog runs on iPhone and Android, from one codebase. There is no web app. The iPhone app is on the App Store; Android is a signed build we send.

  • Logging and export are freeAvailable

Every category, every published minimum, and the whole capture flow cost nothing. Export is a CSV, where your specialty module supports it.

  • The layers on top are PremiumAvailable

Case planning, notes, and templates beyond the free allowance, ACGME Case Log form fill, and calendar schedule import are Premium. Premium is a subscription in the app; the pricing page has the figure.

  • The form fill runs in ChromeAvailable

The extension runs in Chrome and Edge, on a computer, one case at a time. It fills the fields and stops there; you review every one and press Submit.
